Pensioner, 84, rushed to hospital after flat goes up in flames on Edinburgh street

An 84-year-old woman was taken to hospital following a fire in Edinburgh last night.

Emergency services rushed to the incident in a property in Broughton Road, in the north of the city, at around 8.20pm on Tuesday.

Pictures from the scene showed at least two fire appliances attended and a section of the road, between Beaverhall Road and East Claremont Street, was taped off to motorists.

The pensioner was taken to hospital, where it is believed she was treated for smoke inhilation. Her exact condition is not known at this time.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a fire within a property on Broughton Road in Edinburgh around 8.20pm on Tuesday, 26 October, 2021.

“An 84-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment and the fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”

A fire service spokesperson confirmed they were called to the fire but were unable to provide any further details.
