A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop following at a collision and dangerous driving.

He has been released under investigation.

Police have launched a fresh appeal for crash witnesses to come forward.

Officers are urging the driver and passengers inside a red Toyota Avensis who were in the area of Broadhalgh around the time of the collision to come forward.

A GMP spokesman said: "They are not in any trouble but could be vital witnesses."

Police Constable Peter Cunningham, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, added: “This truly is a tragic incident in which an elderly man has lost his life and our thoughts are with his family at what is an unimaginably difficult time.

“We have a dedicated team of officers who are committed to finding out exactly what happened in the lead up to this collision and provide the man’s family with the answers they so desperately deserve.

“Were you in the area at the time of the collision? – I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has dash cam footage, to please come forward and assist our enquiries.”

The crash happened shortly before 3pm on Monday, April 8.

Anyone with information should call GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
