Pensioner, 81, killed while walking his dog in A78 road crash horror

A pensioner has died after a road crash in North Ayrshire yesterday.

The tragic incident happened around 3pm outside The Rowan Tree garden centre and restaurant on the A78 at Ardrossan.

It involved an 81-year-old man, who was out walking his dog, and a 73-year-old woman, who was driving a black Ford Focus at the time.

The man was, sadly, pronounced dead at the scene when mercy crews arrived to deal with the situation. No information has been provided yet on the condition of the motorist or the animal.

The road was closed for several hours between Ardrossan and Seamill while investigation work was carried out.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor, from Police Scotland, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.

“Road policing officers are continuing enquiries to find out the full circumstances of what happened.

“Anyone who may have been in the area and seen what happened or who has dash-cam is encouraged to get in touch and call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2174 of Thursday, 11 August, 2022.”

In a post on The Rowan Tree Facebook page, owners Abbie and David Castelvecchi paid tribute, saying: "We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of those involved in today's tragic accident.

"To everyone involved, including the emergency services, our thoughts are with you during this difficult time."
