Pensioner, 72, dies after becoming trapped under her own car on driveway

A 72-year-old woman has died after becoming trapped under her own car on her driveway, police have said.

The tragedy unfolded in Plymstock, Devon, on Monday afternoon.

Police, fire and ambulance crews rushed to the scene, and an air ambulance was seen landing nearby.

An ambulance spokesperson said that the woman was treated at the scene and then was taken onto Derriford Hospital by land ambulance for further treatment.

An eyewitness told Plymouth Live the road was closed off and an air ambulance had been dispatched.

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called 12.03 to Shortwood Crescent, Plymouth after it was reported a female had become stuck under a car.

“We sent several ambulances to the scene, including senior paramedics, a doctor and the critical care team from the air ambulance.

“The team treated the female patient at the scene and she was then taken onto hospital for further treatment.”

Both Devon and Cornwall Police and the ambulance service have said it is not clear how the woman became trapped under the vehicle.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "An elderly woman has died after becoming trapped underneath her car in Plymstock.

"Emergency services were called around 12.35pm yesterday [13 May] to the incident involving a yellow and black Smart car on private driveway in Shortwood Crescent.

"The 72-year-old woman from Plymstock sustained serious chest injuries and was treated at the scene. She was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth but later pronounced deceased.

"South West Ambulance Service, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, and specialist medical staff from the Devon Air Ambulance were also in attendance.

"Police officers from the Roads Policing Team, including a specialist vehicle examiner, carried out a thorough scene investigation."
