Pensioner, 71, 'left hysterically crying in pain' after GP 'refused to see her'

A pensioner was allegedly turned away from a doctors surgery and left "hysterically crying with pain" outside because she hadn't booked an appointment.

The unnamed 71-year-old woman is understood to have been waved away from Hedon Group Practice in Market Hill, Hull, on Monday, without seeing a doctor.

Bystanders claim they then stepped in and called an ambulance for the distressed woman and her family have since confirmed she was taken to hospital and remained there until Tuesday, reports Hull Live.

In response, Amalia Booker, chief executive officer of Holderness Health, said she felt the surgery "did take account of what the patient needed" during the incident.

She added: "I cannot comment on individual patients' care. It would not be appropriate for me to discuss that."

Writing on social media, a relative of the woman said: "Shamefully the doctors refused her any treatment and told her to the leave the practice as she didn't have a telephone appointment.

"Just to let you know Hedon Practice, should you even care, she remains in hospital from 9am this morning."

An eyewitness said: "I saw this lady crying outside the doctors....I don't normally bash the doctors as I understand they are under pressure but it was disgusting to watch a grown lady crying outside a doctors' surgery."

Despite refusing to comment on the individual patient’s care, Ms Booker defended the group from several other complaints about the surgery made on social media.

Patients in recent weeks have complained about allegedly being placed on hold for hours when phoning the surgery, being refused appointments and rude experiences with some members of staff.

Ms Booker said: “We are in common with other GP practices across the country in that we are experiencing an unprecedented level of demand.

“We've been running a Covid vaccination programme for six months that takes resources away. If there has been an impact on our services, it has been due to those pressures.

“We are doing absolutely everything we can to make sure appointments are available and that people can get into those appointments.”

The complaints come three years after the merger of several surgeries in the area under the Holderness Health group banner.

In October 2018, Hedon Group Practice and Church View Surgery in Hedon merged with Withernsea-based South Holderness Medical Practice.

The super practice became responsible for around 36,000 patients.

Ms Booker added: “There has been no takeover. Three practices chose from their own decisions to merge together, three practices who were struggling to recruit doctors and were fighting for the future of their services."
