Pension protesters say thank you to Paisley

Women campaigning for the government to amend changes to the pension age have thanked everyone who came along to their recent protest.

The women, dubbed WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequalities) gathered on the steps of Paisley Town Hall ahead of a Court of Appeal challenge to a judicial review last year which dismissed their legal challenge.

Renfrewshire women have been campaigning for the last five years against a rise in the state pension age which they say has left them badly out of pocket.

Paisley woman Kathleen Birney said: “WASPI Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Dumbartonshire and Renfrewshire would like to thank everyone who came along to the recent gathering at Paisley Town Hall to highlight the Judicial Review Appeal in the High Court in London.

“Changes to pension ages were implemented with little, or in most cases, no notification to those most affected, 1950s-born women.

“We all appreciate that equalisation of pension ages was justified but this group of women were disproportionately affected. Over 11,000 women in Renfrewshire alone have lost out on up to £47,000.

“Back to 60 brought a case to the High Court and we await the outcome of the appeal.

“Elaine Loch , a Paisley WASPI woman, wrote this poem about our plight and read it out on the steps of the town hall.

“Thank you also to the local councillors who came along to support us.”
