Penny Lancaster reveals how 9/11 made Rod Stewart change his mind on more children

Penny Lancaster reveals how 9/11 changed Rod Stewart's mind about children

Penny Lancaster reveals Rod Stewart decided to have more children because of 9/11.

The 54-year-old model and her rock star husband, 80, have been married for 18 years and they were always "transparent from the beginning" about what they wanted from the relationship, with the Maggie May hitmaker not keen on expanding his family.

Appearing on UK TV show Loose Women, she said: "we were honest with each other, and we didn't actually bring the subject up again until about 2004.

"Out of nowhere, we were reminiscing and remembering those lives that were lost in 9/11, and thinking about all the children that could've been born from those couples that had sadly lost their lives.

"And then he turned around and said, "Let's make a baby!" I'm like, 'What?!' So that was my dream come true, so it worked out."

Rod has Sarah Streeter, 60, with ex-girlfriend Susannah Boffey, Kimberly, 45, and Sean, 44, with actress Alana Stewart, Ruby, 37, with ex-girlfriend Kelly Emberg, and Renee, 32, with ex Rachel Hunter.

Rod changed his mind about having children, but Penny suffered a miscarriage after falling pregnant.

The couple endured a difficult IVF battle, but later welcomed sons Alastair, 19, and Aiden, 14, into the world.

Penny admitted she stayed patient, and decided "pushing the idea was not the way to go".

Recalling their early conversations, she said: "He was very honest with me, he said, 'Look, I'm excited we're in this relationship together', but the cue has been put away, in other words.

"'I really don't want to enter into another marriage, have more children, I've loved having children and ebing married, but I've had a lot of heartache, I don't want to go through it again.'

"I said, 'Look, I'm not in the place where I want to, but I must also be honest - I have to have a child, I need that in my life, so let's just see how things go.' "
