Penneys worker pleads with customers as thousands swarm shops around Ireland

A Penneys worker has asked customers to be "mindful of staff" after shop doors opened again on Friday.

People queued from the early hours of the morning and gardai even had to be called to some stores as the crowds were so big.

One staff member took to Twitter to remind customers that a lot of the measures in store would be new to them too.

Niamh Smith said: "To anyone going into Penneys to shop today.

"I understand you are all delighted to be back but please be mindful of us staff members.

"It’s all new to us so please listen to the rules and be kind to us.

"We’re just trying to do our job and stay safe."

Primark CEO Paul Marchant asked on Thursday for cooperation from customers in adhering to social distancing measures.

He said: “While it might take a little longer to get into store, once inside, customers will find all their favourite Penneys products and plenty of choice as usual.

"We have worked hard to make sure that clear signage and extra help will be there to guide them through the changes we have made to allow for social distancing.

“We are also asking customers to respect the measures we have put in place to help ensure shopping at Penneys is an enjoyable, safe experience for everyone.”

All 16 stores have now reopened across the country and you can find details on opening hours here.
