Penneys shares online shopping update as stores stay closed during lockdown

Penneys has confirmed that there are "no immediate plans" to launch an online shopping service.

The hugely popular clothing store has been forced to shut due to coronavirus lockdown measures.

Under Level Five, only outlets selling essential items are allowed to open their doors.

However despite huge demand, Penneys is not currently planning to open an online store.

The retailer admitted that alternative plans are always being considered, but added that any customers that want to see their latest products can find details on their website and social media accounts.

A Penneys spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: “Although we will look at alternative business models from time to time, there are no immediate plans to trade online.

"We do of course showcase our products on social media and our website, and our social media channels have over 22 million followers.”

In the lead-up to the second national lockdown last month, thousands of shoppers across the country flocked to Penneys stores before they shut for six weeks.

One worker at a store in the Nutgrove Shopping Centre told the Irish Mirror they were struggling to deal with the queues.

They said: “It’s mental, people are buying whatever they can grab.

“Luckily the company were great to us when we were shut the last time so I’m not too worried about money but I know lots of other people aren’t that lucky.”
