Penneys now taking back old clothes to tackle fashion waste

Penneys are now taking back old clothes and textiles as part of a new recycling scheme to tackle climate change.

The brand, which has been critised for it's fast-fashion model, is now looking to take a new direction.

Customers can now donate unwanted clothes more conveniently by bring old items in store to be recycled.

The recycling boxes will be visible with blue signs in store, and will accept clothing, footwear, bags and textiles like towels or bedsheets from any brand and can be in any condition. They will then be collected, sorted and either re-used, recycled or repurposed.

This isn't the first effort Penneys has made to move away from it's fast-fashion model. The retailer recently launched a collection of "affordable investment pieces" which included it's most expensive coat ever.

Damien O’Neill, Head of Sales said: “We’ve recently launched our bold new ambition to become a circular and more sustainable business: making it easier for customers to donate or recycle their pre-loved clothes is an important part of this.

"Our new scheme in Penneys is part of our goal to help people make more sustainable choices and to recycle or donate with convenience.

"Reducing fashion waste, alongside our commitment that all our clothes will be made from recycled or more sustainably sourced materials by 2030 and how we are working to give our clothes a longer life are all important parts of how we are becoming a more circular business.”

Experts have warned that the fast fashion industry is a major contributor to climate change. Consumers are being encouraged to buy more sustainable items and recycle clothing when possible.
