Penneys key message to customers as Christmas queues build and three shops go 24 hours

Penneys  have issued a key message to customers as Christmas queues build with last minute shopping kicking in.

Three of their busiest stores in Ireland will stay open overnight on Friday while there will be extended shopping hours in all.

The three Irish stores that will stay open overnight are Dundrum, Blanchardstown and Cork Wilton.

Shoppers can see hourly wait time updates from 8pm - 8am live on the Primark Twitter account to see how busy their store may be before arriving.

Primark posted on Twitter: "To help our UK & Irish customers shop safely, 14 of our busiest stores will stay open overnight tonight with extended shopping hours in all.

"Shoppers can view hourly wait time updates from 8pm - 8am live on our Twitter account to see how busy their store may be before arriving.

"For a safe shopping experience we have extensive safety measures in all our stores including social distancing protocols, limited number of customers in store, hand sanitisation stations, Perspex screens or cubicles at tills, required use of face coverings & increased cleaning."

It comes as Taoiseach Micheál Martin has signalled that non-essential retail is set to stay open under a tightening of measures to come into play before New Year’s Eve.

Mr Martin confirmed there will be a “shortening" of the period in which there was to be a relaxation of measures over the festive season.

He said that Cabinet will deal with the NPHET advice on Tuesday.

Mr Martin said these restrictions will relate to the hospitality sector and inter-county travel “but non-essential retail would be allowed to continue to open.”

He said: "There will be a meeting of Cabinet on Tuesday to deal with the advice from NPHET in relation to restrictions to be brought in before New Year's Eve and that would in particular relate to hospitality and inter-county travel.

"But non-essential retail would be allowed to continue to open.

"I think the key point is this virus spreads very rapidly and when it gets to a certain level it spread exponentially."

It's understood the tightening of restrictions could come into play on December 28.
