Penneys Ireland: Fashion chain speaks out on price information and 'fire sales' as Dublin stores reopen

On June 15, all of Penneys' stores in Dublin will reopen their doors to shoppers for the first time since lockdown.

The fashion chain is bracing itself for an influx of shoppers, and has confirmed the actions it is taking to ensure that everybody is kept as safe as possible when stores open their doors.

As Penneys doesn't have an online website, it has not sold any products while stores have been shut - leading many shoppers to ask whether there will be a big sale to get rid of excess stock when shops open.

Now the high-street chain has revealed whether or not there will be a sale, and it's bad news for bargain hunters.

Speaking about the possibility of a sale, finance chief John Bason said: "What we will do, because we've got the financial wherewithal, we'll carry it through to next year."

He clarified: "We are not doing a fire sale. Customers can look forward to our normal prices offering everyday value."

The chain's owner, Associated British Foods (AF), said: "As European governments have begun to ease restrictions on clothing retailing we have been able to reopen stores.

"Safety has been our highest priority in our detailed preparations to welcome our customers and employees back to stores. We are following government safety advice in all markets.

"Importantly, we will apply the valuable experience gained from more than 100 stores which are already open as we open the remainder of our estate, including stores across Ireland.

"Social distancing protocols, hand sanitiser stations, perspex screens at tills and additional cleaning of high frequency touch points in the store are among the measures we are implementing."
