Why Idaho Will Win
The offense has to get moving right away, and it has to come from the line.
The Vandals might have struggled to score on a regular basis last season, but eight starters are back on the O including four up front after doing a nice job of keeping defenses out of the backfield.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the Vandals will keep the No. 1 sacking defense from last year from getting behind the line and making big plays, but it should be able to do just enough here and there to let the veteran skill guys work.
On the other side, Penn State’s offense is hoping for new starting quarterback Sean Clifford to be able to handle the work right away, but …
Why Penn State Will Win
The Idaho defense has been a problem for a long, long, long time, and this one won’t be a whole lot better with just five starters back from a group that allowed 455 yards and 38 points per game.
The only way the Nittany Lions blow this – or keep it from being an ugly blowout – is with a whole lot of turnovers and mistakes. Turnovers were a problem throughout last year, but that was nothing compared to Idaho’s issues on the defensive side with just seven takeaways.
And yes, the Penn State defensive front should be able to overpower the Idaho offensive front – even if it’s a veteran group.
What’s Going To Happen
The Nittany Lions will be able to call their shot. The bench will be emptied in the third quarter in Part One of the tune-up tour. Buffalo is up next before dealing with Pitt, but against the Vandals, this will be about getting the backups in as soon as possible. The starters will look great.
