In the words of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the girls are fighting! And by girls, we mean Gossip Girl actors Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy, ‘cos the online jabs they’ve been throwing at each other are bloody savage. But are they really feuding?
Before we could kiss June goodbye, You star Penn left fans scratching their heads after seemingly shading Meghann while congratulating her on her hit Netflix series, Sirens.
“I don’t usually do this, but my wife [Domino Kirke] and I just finished Sirens. OK. Sirens, I want to give her her flowers,” Penn began.
“Now obviously there’s Julianne, there’s Kevin, there’s Milly, but this Meghann Fahy. This newcomer, this refreshing, gawky beauty, love it, love you.”
Did you clock the shade? For those who completely missed it, it was when he described Meghann as a “newcomer”.
The word was certainly a choice, since folks who are in the know will be across Meghann’s many roles in Gossip Girl (for one episode hehe), The White Lotus season two, and the Stan’s The Bold Type.
In response to the silly Sirens review, Meghann commented on Penn’s Instagram post, writing. “This is so kind. That you. Tell Domino I say hi. And that her taste is flawless.”
While the comment seemed harmless, Penn corrected his Gossip Girl co-star‘s comment, stating that it should say “Our* taste”.
And from there, the jabs began to roll on out….
“Oops haha. Gawky tho,” she penned, questioning his review.
“I meant it as a compliment! Long arms are so gorgeous but historically less featured,” Penn fired back.
“Chill on the body stuff,” Meghann responded.
“Whoa I’ve obviously been very supportive and complimentary but this feels like a trap,” he wrote before she fired back with, “There you go again with that trapping thing,” referencing his character as Joe Goldberg on You.
After the cat fight in the comments, Badgley then shared another shady Instagram reel to the hot tune that is “Ribs” by Lorde.
“Butterfly effect is crazy because if I’d never met Meghann Fahy on the set of Gossip Girl, my life would be exactly the same,” text overlayed the screen, in which Badgley is seen galivanting on some random’s porch.
The tit-for-tat didn’t stop there, with Meghann sharing her own video taking a light dig at Penn with a mention of Pedro Pascal for extra measure.
“Penn Badgley’s a 10, if you’re looking for a Temu Pedro Pascal,” Meghann said in the Instagram video.
While Penn didn’t respond to that quip, the official account of his podcast, Podcrushed, replied in the comments: “Shouldn’t laugh but” followed by a shy emoji — “which is universal code for Joe Goldberg just got OWNED!”.
Are Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy feuding?
Given the playfulness of the barbs, one could assume Penn and Meghann’s social media interactions were never at risk of launching an all-out feud, but it seems the manufactured beef serves a greater purpose than just our entertainment.
The pair of actors are both set to star in Deserve Each Other, an upcoming rom-com directed by Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn and based on the 2020 novel of the same name.
Since the plot of the book revolves around an out-of-love couple feuding about who’ll foot the bill of their cancelled wedding, Penn and Meghann’s offscreen tiff feeds nicely into the chemistry that will undoubtedly play out on screens, though a release date for Deserve Each Other has not yet been announced.
So there you have it folks, the back-and-forth between Penn and Meghann is nothing but a faux feud used to hype their latest film and I, for one, fell for it hook line and sinker. Consider me very much sat.
