Penguins' Recchi to divest interest in Las Vegas' new NHL franchise

Mark Recchi, the Penguins' player development coach, figured he was making a simple investment.

Turns out he was making a significant mistake.

Recchi purchased a tiny share _ believed to be .01 percent _ of the NHL's new franchise in Las Vegas, making him one of several people reported to be minority owners in that team.

Trouble is, Recchi still is on the Penguins' payroll, and there's an obvious conflict in being involved with two clubs.

Recchi acknowledged via text message Wednesday afternoon that he will be relinquishing what he described as his "very, very, very, small" share in the newly named Golden Knights.

A Penguins official said the team had been unaware of Recchi's financial interest in the Las Vegas team until the issue was raised by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and confirmed that he will be divesting his stake in that club.

Coincidentally enough, Jim Rutherford, formerly an executive with Carolina, had to unload a share of ownership in the Hurricanes after he joined the Penguins as general manager in 2014.

Other individuals reported by ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell to own a small share in the Golden Knights include New England tight end Rob Gronkowski, model Carol Alt and former NHL player Alexei Yashin.

League officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
