Penguins lose to Kings in overtime, 1-0

PITTSBURGH _ No Penguins players were spotted helping the Los Angeles Kings equipment staff by hoofing bags of gear to the team bus, but you probably couldn't blame them if they did.

The Kings dealt the Penguins their second shutout loss of the season Friday, 1-0 in overtime, at PPG Paints Arena.

Generating shots was not an issue for the Penguins. They finished with 39. Getting ones that were an actual threat to Kings goaltender Peter Budaj, however, proved to be challenging.

Sidney Crosby did not score for a second consecutive game, the first time this season that's happened.

Even more jarring was the fact that Los Angeles did not allow the Penguins a single goal; they were averaging 5.6 goals per game during a seven-game winning streak that's now history.

A day after coach Penguins Mike Sullivan announced Kris Letang would be out for a couple weeks with a lower-body injury, Trevor Daley did not complete the third period because of an undisclosed injury.

Brian Dumoulin took a puck off the cheek early in the third, but he returned later in the period as the Penguins finished the game with five defensemen.

Before Dumoulin returned, the Penguins killed off a Chris Kunitz minor for holding while using Justin Schultz and Derrick Pouliot on the penalty kill _ not exactly their normal duties.

Tyler Toffoli scored the only goal of the night off a three-on-one rush at 1:00 of overtime, beating Matt Murray on the glove-side.

The sequence started when Phil Kessel broke his stick taking a shot, leading to a Kings counterattack.

With Letang out, Sullivan jumped Schultz up to the top power play, and he got plenty of reps early.

Eleven of the Penguins first 30 shots came with the man-advantage, but they failed to score on four chances that totaled 7 minutes, 30 seconds.

The second period saw the Penguins apply pressure early, with five power play shots right off the hop, but Budaj held strong.

He even stopped Bryan Rust after a nifty, long saucer pass from Kunitz. He got some help when Kessel whiffed following a spinning play from Evgeni Malkin.

While Daley was knocked from the game, Matt Cullen returned from an early injury scare when he absorbed a slash from Matt Greene.
