NEW YORK _ After four straight losses and a 5-10-2 overall downturn, Doug Weight summed up the situation before the Islanders faced Pittsburgh Friday night at Barclays Center to start the second half of their season.
"We can't waste any more time," the Isles' coach said.
Then they went out and made it five straight losses.
The Penguins claimed a 4-0 win behind Sidney Crosby's goal and three assists, Daniel Sprong's first two goals of the season and rookie Tristan Jarry's 31 saves.
The Islanders (20-18-4) also lost the NHL's second-leading assist man, Josh Bailey, to a lower-body injury in the first period. There was no immediate word on the severity.
Sprong and Evgeni Malkin scored against Jaroslav Halak in the first 3:30 of the second period to give Pittsburgh (21-19-3) a 2-0 lead. Malkin's goal was on a power play.
Crosby also banked in a puck off Halak from a bad angle with 4:10 left in the period. Sprong tacked on the final goal with 6:32 left in the game.
