Penge shooting: Murder charge after father-of-four shot in back of head in London park

Victim: Dean Edwards (Picture: Metropolitan Police)

A man has been charged with murder over the death of a father-of-four shot in the back of the head while walking through a London park.

Metropolitan Police say Taylor Purdy, 25, of south-east London, has been charged with murder and will appear at a court to be decided on Tuesday via videolink.

Dean Edwards, 43, was killed in the early hours of July 12 in Betts Park in Penge, south-east London, after meeting friends for a drink.

Earlier this month, Mr Edwards’ daughter, Hollie Edwards, 21, described her father as a "big softie" and appealed for anyone with information concerning his murder to come forward.

“Our dad was a friendly, bubbly and loving person," Ms Edwards said.

“He was never confrontational and hated arguments, he was a big softie at heart, loved all the grandchildren and spoiled them.

“He was a good, innocent person. He was really generous, used to get all the beers in. You knew you were having a cheap night if you went out with dad. But he’s been taken from us, wrongly."

Police believe Mr Edwards, who had worked for a locally based events hire firm for the last two decades, walked through Betts Park shortly after midnight on the night he died.

He crossed the park and was walking down the alleyway leading onto Croydon Road near his home when he was shot with a 9mm pistol. His lifeless body was discovered at around 2am.

Police said Mr Edwards, who adopted three step-children in his early 20s, was not involved in any criminal activity and had never been in trouble with them.
