Penge crash: Eight-month-old baby boy dies one week after collision between pram and car in south-east London

Nicole and Luciano Newman

A baby boy has died one week after his mother was hit by a car while pushing him in a pram in south-east London.

Luciano Newman, who was eight months old, was left fighting for life in hospital following the collision in Penge on January 13. He died on Sunday, Scotland Yard said in a statement.

His mother Nicole Newman, 23, died at the scene following the crash at around 8pm.

The Met said the driver of the car is co-operating with police and an investigation is ongoing.

A witness told how Ms Newman was hurled “20 feet” into the air when she was struck by a blue Ford Mondeo while crossing Croydon Road.

Paramedics battled to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 8pm.

Joe Ball, a 30-year-old electrician, told how he heard a crash and saw the woman thrown into the air.

He told the Standard: “I have never seen anything like it in my life. I knew she was dead when I called the ambulance, I just couldn’t look. All I can think about is hearing the car hit her. I have never heard a bang like it.”

He added: “It all happened so quickly. In that split second I saw her up in the air.”

Mr Ball added that the young mother was walking with her partner at the time of the crash.

He added: “I heard her boyfriend say, ‘My girlfriend is dead’. It was just horrendous to see something like that.”
