Penelope Wilton to star as woman who survived suicide pact in new ITV drama

Dame Penelope Wilton will play Mavis Eccleston in the series (Doug Peters/PA) - (PA Wire)

Downton Abbey actress Dame Penelope Wilton is to star as Mavis Eccleston, a woman who survived a suicide pact with her husband of nearly 60 years and was subsequently arrested and charged with his murder, in a new ITV drama.

The four-part series, named Mavis Eccleston, will also see The Crown star Sir Jonathan Pryce play her husband Dennis, with filming due to begin in Bristol later this year.

Dame Penelope said: “Mavis was devoted to her husband Dennis, their enduring love for each other clear to see to all. They lived life on their own terms and when the time came, she wanted to respect his wishes.

Sir Jonathan Pryce will play Mavis’s husband Dennis (Ben Whitley/PA) (PA Wire)

“The fact she then faced the very real prospect of spending the rest of her life in prison for acting out of love is simply unimaginable. To be asked to bring her experience to life is a huge responsibility and true honour.”

The couple decided to end their lives together when Dennis received a terminal cancer diagnosis and declined treatment, to the upset of their adult children Kevin and Joy. Dennis had already suffered with cancer twice before and did not want to face the toll of treatment.

Mavis was eventually cleared of the charges against her.

Sir Jonathan added: “This is a powerful and timely story of an extraordinary, devoted couple as they face the painful dilemma of assisted dying.

“We will hopefully honour their deep love for each other and their bravery.”

The series will be written by Unforgotten screenwriter Chris Lang and directed by Bruce Goodison, who also directed ITV’s Anne, which told the story of Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams.

Goodison said: “What excites me about this series is the towering humanity and dignity of this lively Cannock-based working-class family. There is joy in the pain this family suffered during this horrendous ordeal.

“They are the perfect lightning rod for the assisted dying debate.”

A release date for the series is yet to be announced, with further casting information expected in due course.
