Penalty agony for Kyle Lafferty in Cypriot Super Cup final

There was agony for Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty as he missed the decisive penalty in the Cypriot Super Cup final on Tuesday.

Lafferty's Anorthosis Famagusta side suffered penalty shootout heartache after the decider against Omonia Nicosia ended in a 1-1 draw.

The former Rangers forward picked up a yellow card as he played the full 90 minutes.

Omonia opened the scoring through Marko Scepovic in the 13th minute before Famagusta hit back on the stroke of half time through Andreas Chrysostomou.

Evenly poised, the match headed to penalties with both teams missing their opening spot-kicks.

The two sides then scored their next penalties before Omonia edged ahead.

Famagusta missed their next but Omonia couldn't take advantage as they missed their fourth attempt.

Both sides then scored leaving Lafferty to take the final penalty to send the shootout into sudden death, but he couldn't convert from 12 yards.

The 33-year-old joined the Cypriot First Division side after departing Kilmarnock following their relegation to the Scottish Championship.

Lafferty had a sensational spell with Killie last season scoring 13 times in 13 games.

Lafferty is hoping to get regular game time and goals under his belt ahead of Northern Ireland's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Lithuania and Switzerland.
