Penalties to be imposed on employers of tailgating drivers in Japan

Businesses operating trucks, taxis and buses will soon become subject to administrative penalties if their drivers tailgate other vehicles, according to the transport ministry.

The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry plans to impose the administrative penalties starting in late November.

The Road Transport Vehicle Law and other regulations state that when a driver commits a malicious offense, such as driving under the influence or driving without license, the ministry can issue a warning to the business operators, suspend their use of the vehicles and impose other penalties following an inspection of the operators.

Tailgating has not previously been considered a malicious offense, so the ministry plans to issue an official notice to local governments that tailgating will now be defined as such.

The measures were taken in response to the revised Road Traffic Law, which came into force in June and newly established tailgating as a crime.
