Pen y Fan named most Instagrammable walk in UK

By Rebecca Astill

Popular Welsh hiking route up Pen y Fan mountain has ranked as the most picturesque rural walk in the UK with 22,437 Instagram hashtags per kilometre.

Overall, there are over 144,000 posts on Instagram with the location's hashtag in the caption, which is unsurprising given the stunning moorland and view across Brecon Beacons National Park at the top.

The highest mountain in Britain south of Snowdonia is particularly popular among sunrise and sunset seekers - catch the top at the right time on a clear day and you’ll be hard pushed to see a better one.

Pen y Fan roughly translates to “top spot” from Welsh to English, and right at the top you can pose with The National Trust cairn which says “886m”.

A quick glance at the #penyfan hashtag on Instagram shows thousands of pictures posing with the iconic cairn, as well as sunrises and sunsets, dogs posing at the top and even rare cloud inversions.

The gentle four-mile ‘Motor Way’ route takes you right to the top of the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons, or you could challenge yourself with the 11 mile Beacon Circuit starting from The Storey Arms, which takes around two hours so you will need a decent level of fitness but it is suitable for children.

The research was undertaken by Premier Inn in a bid to help find the best staycation locations.

A spokesperson for Premier Inn said, “With many of us remaining unsure on whether we can travel abroad or not, taking a long walk in your staycation destination – or even your home town - can feel like a nice escape from the mundanity of the everyday life, and a great way to explore the area.

"That’s why we were curious to find out which routes were being shared the most online. "
