Pelicans, Saints owner Gayle Benson diagnosed with coronavirus

New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson has been diagnosed with coronavirus, as reported by The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate on Friday.

Benson, 73, is reportedly in recovery after being diagnosed with the illness within recent weeks and is “doing well,” per Saints senior vice president of communications Greg Bensel.

The New Orleans Pelicans saw three players test positive for coronavirus upon the restart of the league’s season in mid-June. The identity of any of the three players was never revealed, though.

Precautions have been aplenty across the franchise, though. Assistant coach Jeff Bzdelik did not travel with the team to the bubble in Orlando due to being considered at high-risk for the virus. Alvin Gentry was cleared to join the team on the day the team was set to leave for Florida as well.

Benson took over ownership of both the Pelicans and Saints following the death of her husband Tom in 2018. Tom bought the Pelicans in 2012 for $338 million.
