Pelicans News: J.J. Redick ready to take on mentoring role in New Orleans

Following the Pelicans’ trade of Anthony Davis, New Orleans had only a few weaknesses in their roster but big ones. The team was loaded with a good, young nucleus but needed veterans to serve as mentors on the roster. In terms of actual on-court skillsets, the team also needed outside shooting.

Enter JJ Redick

Redick was the perfect combination of the two with a reputation as one of the best outside shooters in the league as well as one of the most respected veterans in the league. During his introductory conference call, Redick talked about his responsibilities this season to be a mentor to the young Pelicans.

“I’ve been mentoring guys for a long time – that’s not part of me that just started in Philadelphia. It’s something I take a lot of pride in, and I’m a firm believer that the best way to lead and mentor is through action.”

Redick is joined by fellow veterans Jrue Holiday and fellow newcomer Derrick Favors as the veterans on the team and should bring a perfect balance to the roster.

He also could be vital in unlocking the potential of wing players like Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and even Nickeil Walker-Alexander. His ability to move off the ball is unparalleled in the league and is something that players both young and old can always improve upon. Those types of things could be the area that Redick has the biggest impact.
