Pelicans EVP Griffin says there’s not a ‘shot clock’ on Davis trade

Reports surfaced on Monday that the New Orleans Pelicans were listening to deals from teams, exploring multi-team deals and communicating with other teams about their preferences to get a deal done before the 2019 draft in nine days.

And predictably so, Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin told everyone to hold up on the timeline during his public comments at Tuesday’s introduction of vice president of basketball operations and team development Swin Cash. According to Andrew Lopez of the Times-Picayune, Griffin told reports that there is no ‘shot clock’ on a Davis deal.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported yesterday that the Pelicans have communicated to teams that they’d prefer to do a trade for 2019 picks before the draft so they are able to get more players in for workouts and interviews. So while that may be the case, stating it publicly would definitely hurt the Pelicans leverage a little bit.

Griffin’s stance that the Pelicans are being patient and don’t have timelines in mind at least helps them in the battle of perception. But make no mistake that what the Pelicans are saying publicly and how they’re negotiating behind closed doors are related, but not at all the same.
