Peel L&P is updating its masterplan for the massive Liverpool Waters regeneration scheme - and is holding events next week to ask the public what it wants to see happen on the city’s world-famous waterfront.
Peel L&P is behind the ongoing £5.5bn transformation of the former docks in Liverpool stretching from the world-famous Pier Head in the city centre north to the boundary of the busy modern Port of Liverpool.
There are already several high-profile projects underway on the docks - most famously the building of Everton FC’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
Now Peel L&P has confirmed it is revisiting its masterplan for the 60 acre site. It says the update is needed because the way people live, work, and socialise has “changed significantly” since the last masterplan in 2013, while local and national planning guidance has also been updated.
The company says: “The updated plan retains the ambitious vision to create a new, thriving mixed use extension to the city. It now includes more access to green space, promoting diversity nature and sustainability, and easy routes to get around, including the waterfront trail.”
As well as including details of the masterplan on its website, Peel L&P is holding two drop-in events next week to canvas opinion on the plans.
Peel L&P says projects with a value of more than £880m are underway at Liverpool Waters. As well as the new Everton stadium, those projects include the new Isle of Man ferry terminal and two residential schemes totalling 600 homes.
In March this year plans were approved for “Central Park", a 1.9 hectare green space.
Peel L&P says Liverpool Waters will now include:
- A new heritage space in the Clarence dock neighbourhood called ‘Dockside’, keeping existing heritage features alongside increased water access.
- “A diverse mix of homes including type and tenure that provides something for everyone at all stages of life, including affordable housing”
- Different types of workspaces, hotels, hospitality and retail units “from local convenience to impressive locations for restaurants and bars”
- A new “cultural landmark” – a 2.3km Mersey riverside walk from Pier Head to Everton Stadium
- Community assets including educational facilities and a health centre
- Public transport connections including a new bus route running through its heart and cycle/scooter hubs.
- “An ambitious district heating network and renewable energy production.”
Chris Capes, Peel L&P’s development director for Liverpool Waters, said: “The world has changed, Liverpool has changed, and the way in which we all live, work, and socialise has changed significantly since we first submitted our proposals in 2013. As the custodians of the Liverpool Waters site, it makes sense to revisit the Masterplan and make changes which we know will make Liverpool Waters even better.
“The updated masterplan is still hugely ambitious in scale, responds to the needs of our local communities and our climate emergency, and maximises the city’s illustrious heritage. We are keen to hear what people think and if they can, pop along and talk to us in person.”
