Pedro Strop believes he can return to Cubs this week

Reliever Pedro Strop remains optimistic he could rejoin the Cubs before the end of the regular season.

"I feel a lot better," Strop said before running to the field to play catch Sunday morning. "I'll just keep doing the rehab and do whatever they ask me to do."

Strop has continued throwing despite suffering a left hamstring injury Sept. 13, and even manager Joe Maddon admitted that Strop is "a lot better than we thought to this point."

That's an encouraging sign considering Strop was declared out for the rest of the season an hour after suffering the injury while running to first base against the Nationals.

"It's one of those things that you listen to the guy," Maddon said. "He'll let us know."

Maddon admitted that Strop is "surprising himself."

"He's not feeling anything negative after he throws or moves or jogs," Maddon said. "He's progressing very well."
