Pedestrianisation of Dublin city centre streets could be extended to weekdays after 'encouraging' trial

The pedestrianisation of Dublin city centre streets could be extended to weekdays after "encouraging" weekend trials, it has been revealed.

Roads around Grafton Street were closed off to traffic again over the Bank Holiday weekend as part of a Dublin City Council initiative.

This extension has been described as a step in the right direction as vehicles were banned until 11pm with DCC to meet soon to discuss the future of the plan.

Dublin Town CEO Richard Guiney says it would make sense to expand the trial.

He said: "We would believe that the likes of South William Street, Drury Street, South Anne Street, Duke Street would all do very well from pedestrianisation.

"That appears to be the case so the results are very encouraging; we'd like to see it extending to a seven day week basis.

"We believe that the extension to 11pm was the right move so it's very encouraging and I think it's the right thing for the city."
