Pedestrian took shortcut along motorway after Christmas party because it was “the way home they knew”

A pedestrian had to be taken off the motorway by police after using the carriageway as a shortcut.

The jaywalker told officers it was “the way home they knew” as they made their way along the A627(M).

Police say the person was returning home after a work Christmas party.

They have since been fined by police officers, who offered some “strong words of advice” about road safety.

The busy stretch of motorway runs between Chadderton, in Oldham, and Rochdale.

Traffic officers have now used the case to proffer a warning to others about the dangers of walking in the road.

The North West Motorway Police tweeted about the incident on Friday night (December 17).

“A drunk pedestrian has just been removed from the A627M after stating that it was the way home they knew after a works xmas party,” they tweeted.

“Taken home with strong words of advice and a fine.

“The motorway is not for pedestrians & should never be used as short cut. #RoadSafety”
