Pedestrian taken to hospital with suspected broken hip after being hit by bus in Newcastle

A pedestrian who was hit by a bus outside Newcastle Central Station is being treated for a suspected broken hip.

Emergency services were called to the A186 Neville Street in Newcastle city centre shortly before 11am on Wednesday.

A pedestrian had been struck by a single-decker Stagecoach bus outside the train station.

As police carried out a collision investigation, including a brakes test, one lane was blocked to traffic.

An ambulance was also at the scene and took the man who had been hit to hospital.

Police tape was put up around a pedestrian crossing while emergency services were on the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 10.48 am today we received a report of a collision involving a bus and a pedestrian at Neville Street, Newcastle.

“The male pedestrian was taken to hospital by ambulance with a suspected broken hip.

“As a result of the collision, traffic was diverted into the bus-only lane.”

The road was fully reopened after around an hour.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 10.36am to a person who had been hit by a bus outside of Central Station.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance and took a male patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with a hip injury."
