Pedestrian taken to hospital with head injuries after being hit by a car on Wearmouth Bridge

A man has been taken to hospital following a collision on the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Friday morning following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian on the southbound carriageway.

Paramedics assessed the patient, who is in his 30s, at the scene before taking him to Sunderland Royal Hospital with head injuries.

The road has since been reopened.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.35am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle.

"We sent a specialist paramedic and an ambulance and the patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with injuries to the face and head."

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “At 8.35am today (Friday) we received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

“Emergency services attended the scene and the male pedestrian – in his 30s – was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
