A pedestrian was struck and killed by a commuter train Monday morning in northwest suburban Elgin.

The person was hit by an inbound Milwaukee District-West train about 10:15 a.m. between Big Timber Road and the Elgin Station, according Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead, Reile said. Train service was delayed for several hours as passengers were bussed from the affected train to the Elgin station.

The Kane County coroner’s office has not released details about the death. Metra police were conducting a death investigation.
