Pedestrian struck by vehicle at Belmont

A man in his 70s is in a critical but stable condition after he was struck by a vehicle at Belmont Thursday afternoon.

NSW Ambulance crews and a specialist medical team were called to Brooks Parade just before 2.30pm and treated the man for a head injury, and other minor injuries, before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Officers attached to the Lake Macquarie Police District have established traffic diversions and have urged drivers in the area to exercise caution.

"When driving to an accident like this, you start thinking of the worst case scenario," special operations paramedic Peter Watts said.

"Paramedics and the medical team assessed the male to work out the full extent of his injuries before transporting to hospital."

"We encourage everyone to please be careful on and around our roads as these accidents can turn to critical incidents quickly."
