Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run named as police issue update on investigation

A man who was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Tameside has been named.

David Clegg, 56, was walking at the junction of Kings Road and Queens Road in the Hurst Cross area of Ashton-under-Lyne when he was hit by a van.

Emergency services rushed to his aid at around 11.45pm on Saturday, June 19, but he was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of medics.

An inquest into Mr Clegg's death is due to open at South Manchester Coroners' Court, in Stockport, on Friday morning (July 2).

His name and details have been confirmed in court documents.

Greater Manchester Police told the Manchester Evening News that three people have so far been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

All three have since been released pending further investigation, the force says.

Following initial enquiries, GMP found that a white Mercedes Sprinter van had been travelling along Lees Road.

It then continued onto Hurst Cross, where it was involved in a collision with Mr Clegg, who was crossing the road.

The van failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned on Park Road in Stalybridge.

Tributes to Mr Clegg were left outside of the Royal Oak pub, in Hurst Cross, following his death.

In a statement issued through GMP, a member of his family said: "The whole family are devastated at our loss.

"This is a difficult time at the moment and the family would like privacy at this time to process the news."

Anyone with information, or dash-cam footage, should contact police via the GMP website or call 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 3668 of June 19, 2021.

Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
