Pedestrian in critical condition after being hit by car on main road between Newport and Cwmbran

A woman is in hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car in the early hours of the morning.

The crash happened on the main road between Newport and Cwmbran around 4am on Sunday.

The A4042 was closed in both directions for a time as police investigated.

Gwent Police said that the collision involved a silver Peugeot 308.

A spokesman said: " The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken the University of Hospital of Wales, Cardiff where  she remains in a critical but stable condition.

"There were no reported injuries to the driver of the car."

The road was closed between the Grove Park roundabout, Newport and the Croes-y-Mwyalch roundabout, Malpas, whilst emergency services dealt with the people and vehicles involved.

The road re-opened at approximately 10.40am.

The spokesman added: " We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and our enquiries are ongoing at this time.

"Officers are requesting that any motorists that used the road around the time of the collision, to please check any dash cam footage that may provide further information that will assist us with our enquiries."
