Elderly woman struck and killed by The Overland train

Passengers and crew remained on board The Overland during its delayed journey.

An 83-year-old woman has been struck and killed by The Overland interstate passenger train at Stirling in the Adelaide Hills.

She was on foot when she was hit just after 8:30am, behind Stonehenge Reserve.

Police said the woman, from Stirling, died at the scene.

Transport safety officers went to Stirling to investigate and will prepare a report for the coroner.

The tragedy delayed the train for more than two hours and its passengers and crew were told by police to stay on board.

The train eventually resumed its Melbourne-bound trip with a replacement driver.

The rail line is used by interstate passenger and freight services, but metropolitan trains have not used it since the 1980s.
