Pedestrian hit by a lorry in city centre crash as air ambulance lands at scene

A major route out of Liverpool is partially closed after a pedestrian was hit by a lorry.

An air ambulance was among the emergency service response vehicles sent to the scene of the accident on the edge of Liverpool city centre.

Police confirmed the "male pedestrian" was struck by a lorry in Islington just after 11am.

The road remains open but two lanes have been closed.

Ambulance officials confirmed an air ambulance, land ambulance, rapid response vehicle and advanced paramedic were all sent to Shaw Street, close to Islington at 11.06am.

The man was taken to hospital by land ambulance after suffering arm and leg injuries.

A North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said it did not appear the pedestrian's injuries were "too serious."

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to Islington at 11.10am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a lorry and pedestrian. A male pedestrian has been taken to hospital."

Travel monitors INRIX said the accident is affecting traffic heading out of Liverpool city centre.

Elsewhere a road in Warrington was temporarily blocked after a crash.

Church Street reopened at 12.10pm after an accident between Farrell Street and A57 Manchester Road.
