Pedestrian flown to hospital by air ambulance after being hit by a bus in Sunderland

A pedestrian who was struck by a bus has been flown to hospital.

Emergency services and the air ambulance were called to Silksworth Lane in Sunderland on Monday afternoon after a woman was hit by single decker bus.

She was treated at the scene before being airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle by the air ambulance.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Just before 12.30pm today we received a report of a collision involving a bus and a pedestrian on Silksworth Lane, Sunderland.

"Emergency services attended and the female pedestrian was taken to hospital.

"Inquiries are ongoing."

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 12.19pm to reports of a road traffic collision in Silksworth Lane, Sunderland.

"We sent two double-crewed ambulances, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient has been flown to the RVI."

The road had been closed by police as they carried out investigation work before being reopened just after 3pm.
