Elderly woman dies in early-morning New Town crash

An elderly woman was killed after being hit by a ute.

An elderly woman has died after being hit by a ute in the Hobart suburb of New Town early this morning.

The crash occurred on Forster Street, closing the road for about four hours while police investigated.

A 45-year-old man from New Town who was driving the ute was on his way to work.

Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Darren Latham said the woman was crossing the road in wet and dark conditions.

She died at the scene.

He said the driver was badly shaken.

"The driver remained at the scene and provided some assistance to the lady and is providing assistance to police in the investigation," he said.

"At the time, the lady was wearing dark clothing.

"It seems ... to be unfortunately a tragic accident."

Police said speeding and alcohol did not play a part in the crash.

The police investigation is still ongoing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
