Pedestrian becomes first person to die on Canberra roads in 2019 after being hit by car

Belconnen Way is one of the main arterial roads in Canberra's north.

A man has died after being hit by a car on Belconnen Way in Canberra's north on Friday night.

ACT police said the man was a pedestrian and a car collided with him about 8:00pm.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.

Police would not disclose the age of the man or how the collision occurred.

On Saturday afternoon, flowers were seen tied to a tree near the corner of Belconnen Way and Eastern Valley Way, near Canberra High School but on the Westfield Belconnen side of the road.

The death was the ACT's first road fatality of 2019.

Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said the "tragic incident" was a reminder to take care.

"I would urge all road users to exercise care and caution on our roads during this busy period," he said.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dash-cam footage of it to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.
