Pedestrian, 25, in hospital with life-threatening injuries after lorry crash in Ilkeston

A man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being involved in a collision with a lorry in the early hours of the morning.

Police cordoned off a large stretch of road on the A609 Nottingham Road in Ilkeston on Tuesday, May 12.

Both directions were closed from Brooke Street to Furnace Road, near to the Gallows Inn.

Derbyshire Police are carrying out an investigation to determine what has happened, after being called to the area at 1.45am.

The road was closed until 9am, with traffic now returning to normal.

A police spokeswoman said: "We were called to a report of a serious collision between a lorry and a pedestrian in Nottingham Road, Ilkeston at 1.45am this morning.

"The pedestrian, a 25-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment with injuries that are described as life-threatening.

"The road was closed for a number of hours but has now re-opened. An investigation into the collision is in its early stages."

Travel site Inrix said traffic was affected on a number of key roads.

It said: "A609 Ilkeston Road in both directions closed due to police incident between Brooke Street (Ilkeston) and Stoney Lane (Trowell), near the Gallows Inn.

"Sensors clearly show traffic returning to normal around the area by 9.15am. Buses 2 and 15 have been diverting through the Stanton area."
