Pedestrian, 21, hit by car on A690 near Durham dies hours later in hospital

A pedestrian who was struck by a car on the A690 outside Durham city centre has died.

Emergency services were called to the collision involving a Vauxhall Antara and a 21-year-old man on the eastbound side of the road at around 2.25am on Thursday.

The pedestrian suffered serious head and leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, for treatment.

He died in hospital a few hours later.

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, Durham Constabulary said.

The 40-year-old driver of the car was uninjured in the collision, which happened between the Gilesgate Roundabout and the Belmont junction.

The road was closed in both directions for more than four hours as a collision investigation took place.

The investigation is ongoing into the crash and anyone with information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101 quoting reference number 16 of January 23.
