‘Peckish’ rat causes rail chaos after gnawing through power cable on busy Scots train line

A naughty rat who chewed through a power cable at a Scots train station sparking travel chaos has paid the ultimate price.

The pesky critter was found lying dead next to a gnawed power line at the scene near Kirkcaldy train station in Fife on Saturday morning.

ScotRail were alerted to a signalling fault at the busy transport hub shortly before 8am with trains being forced to travel at a slower speed than normal.

Engineers from Network Rail soon discovered the culprit lying dead next to a partially chewed cable.

They tweeted: “We're responding to a damaged cable which is disrupting services in the Fife area.

“Engineers are currently sourcing materials and will be on site shortly to repair the damage.”

Social media users were quick to crack the jokes about the suspect cable-chewer.

One wrote: “Shocking how small cable thieves are getting these days.”

Another added: “He would have got a right shock doing that.”

While a third simply said: “Rats bad.”

Train disruption continued throughout the morning but services eventually resumed as normal shortly before 1pm.
