London gun crime: Five injured in three shootings within 24 hours as police hunt suspects

Five men have been injured in three separate shootings in south and east London within the space of 24 hours.

The Met police launched appeals for information on Monday afternoon as they revealed details of two horrifying gun attacks on Sunday evening.

In the first, two men were shot at by moped-riding thugs who fired a gun into their car in Peckham - causing the victims’ vehicle to flip as they tried to flee.

Officers were scrambled to Lyndhurst Way around 6.15pm, after a member of the public rang 999 to report gunfire.

They found two male victims, who it is understood were in a car when they were approached by two suspects riding a moped who fired a gun at them.

As the victims attempted to escape, their car crashed into another parked car and flipped onto its roof.

One of the victims then ran from the vehicle, but was shot as he tried to hide in a garden in Ivanhoe Road.

The second victim was injured in the car crash. His injuries are not described as life-threatening or life-changing.

Police are also working to trace another victim they believe was in the car when it was targeted.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information or video of what happened to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Mat Freeman, from the Met’s Specialist Crime North team, said: “We know that when this incident happened there were members of public and vehicles driving nearby.

“Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw or heard anything suspicious at around that time. Also, if you were driving in the area, did you record something on dashcam, or might you have captured something on your doorbell camera?

“Any piece of information, no matter how irrelevant it may seem, could be crucial in piecing together what took place.”

At 9pm, less than three hours after the Peckham attack, police were called to reports of a shooting in Bow, east London.

Officers rushed to the scene on Swaton Road and found a 21-year-old man and a 66-year-old man with gunshot injuries. They were taken to hospital, where their conditions were both later assessed as not life-threatening.

Police said the victims were inside a vehicle when they were shot by a suspect who fled in a silver Skoda Octavia travelling onto Campbell Road.

Meanwhile, police have launched an “urgent” investigation after a man was reportly shot in the back while he sat in a vehicle in southwest London.

Officers were called to Clarendon Grove in Mitcham around 11.20pm on Saturday, to reports of a gunshot.

They later discovered that a male victim - whose age has not been confirmed - had been taken to hospital with gunshot injuries to his back.

The victim’s injuries were not described as life-threatening or life-changing.

Police do not believe any of the shootings are linked.

Det Insp Freeman added: “Any firearm discharge on the streets of London is cause for huge concern to members of the public, and I can assure them that we share that concern and are doing everything we possibly can to identify those responsible.”

Anyone with information on any of the shootings is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC, giving the reference CAD 5646/07MAY23 for the Peckham attack, CAD 6896/07MAY23 for the Bow attack and CAD 7369/06MAY for the Mitcham attack.
