Pearse-Maynooth train stops suddenly after exhaust fault causes flames break out

A train from Pearse to Maynooth was forced to stop after a fire broke out earlier this evening.

The flames caused by an exhaust fault could be visible when the 18:34 service stopped in Coolmine.

But an automatic extinguishing system ceased the fire.

Barry Kenny, Corporate Communications Manager at Iarnrod Eireann said: “It happened on the 18:34 train from Pearse to Maynooth this evening.

“It was an exhaust fault, we have an automatic extinguishing system and it kicked in almost instantaneously .

“For a brief moment people would’ve seen the flame.

“It didn’t enter the passenger area at all.

“People on the train or platform would’ve seen smoke going off.

"That’s what happens when the extinguisher kicks in.

“It was completely confined to the exhaust and it didn’t affect the passenger area at all.”

Mr Kenny confirmed that nobody was injured due to the incident.
