EARLIER: Newcastle veteran Mitchell Pearce has suffered a potentially serious injury in the opening half of the Knights' clash with St George Illawarra at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.

With the Knights leading 6-0, Pearce reached for a tackle with his left arm and left the field almost immediately with what appeared to be a bicep or pectoral injury.

Such an injury could mean up to three months on the sidelines for the man who played his 300th game last week against the Tigers.

"Mitchell Pearce is in distress. He has tears in his eyes. He knows he's in trouble," Newcastle legend Andrew Johns said on Channel Nine's coverage.

Gehamat Shibasaki opened the scoring for the Knights before Trent Merrin equalised in the dying stages of the first half.

Kurt Mann put the Knights 7-6 up moments before the half-time buzzer.

In a fiery first half, David Klemmer was placed on report for the Knights, while Tex Hoy appeared to suffer a hamstring injury.
