Peaky Blinders viewers left cringing at 'Billy Boys' leader Jimmy McCavern's Glaswegian accent

Peaky Blinders returned to our screens on Sunday night – with the notorious Billy Boys making an appearance in the much-anticipated new series.

Gripping viewers in a violent onslaught, the feared Glasgow mob headed up by Jimmy McCavern sent a blood-soaked message to the Shelby clan by brutally killing off Aberama Gold's fighter son Bonnie in last night's episode.

Most fans have grown used to the gory elements of the gangland drama by now: But many Glaswegian fans were more offended by Irish actor Brian Gleeson's attempt at a Glaswegian accent.

The actor, who stars as McCavern, drew pelters on social media for his Scottish brogue.

But some viewers defended Gleeson's accent, with one claiming it would be better understood by a worldwide audience.

In real life, hardman Billy Fullerton forged links with far-right politician Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists, and started a branch in Glasgow. Gangland boss-turned-MP Tommy is due to come to blows with the fascist leader, played by Sam Claflin in the show.

Peaky Blinders is back on BBC1 on Sunday night at 9pm.
