Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy's character Thomas Shelby to 'become good', says show creator

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy's character Thomas Shelby is set to "become good" by the show's Season 7 conclusion.

The creator of hit drama series Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight, has revealed that there will be some significant changes in store for its lead character, Thomas Shelby, played by Irish actor Cillian Murphy.

Knight said that Murphy's tough-guy character will renounce his villainous ways and redeem himself. He added: “[Season 7] will tell a different story, where Tommy Shelby – who begins as this nihilistic, looking-out only for his family person – will be redeemed, and he will become good.

“I want to take him on that journey from the person we saw [in Season 1], to the person he will become in 1939.”

Knight, who is in the process of writing the sixth season is aiming to bring Shelby's character on a "journey" from the ruthless, murderous villain viewers might remember from the first season to a different, more complex character.

The BBC drama's depiction of the Birmingham based criminal gang family The Shelbys, which is based on reality, has proven enormously popular with viewers since its first air date in 2013.

Knight said he wanted to write recognisable working-class characters “in control of their own destiny to an extent" like he had known growing up.

Season 7 will be the final instalment of the series and it will take the Shelbys into the early 1940s and the outbreak of World War II.
