Peaky Blinders star Charlene McKenna opens up on married life and how she 'freaked out' after losing wedding ring

Peaky Blinders star Charlene McKenna told how she “freaked out” when she lost her wedding ring at the beach.

The Monaghan actress, who plays Captain Swing in the violent BBC series, had only just tied the knot last year with Ozark star Adam Rothenberg when she lost her ring.

She had been filming by the sea when her wedding band had vanished.

She said: “People ask me why I was wearing my ring to work, and I just don’t like to take it off, and normally I put a little box in my trailer.

“But as I am a sea swimmer in the show, I was in a swimsuit, and I didn’t have it in the little box.

“I didn’t want to lose it – irony – so I zipped it into my bag,” she told Irish Country Magazine.

Charlene reckons when she was getting her coffee cup from her bag between takes, when it fell out.

It was only until the next day she noticed it was missing.

“I will never forget that day. I freaked out and drove to the beach. I searched three times on my own, then people with dogs joined in with me. But how we were going to find a needle in a haystack.”

Word got out that Charlene had lost her wedding ring and a group of people with metal detectors took to the beach to find it.

“So many people came with metal detectors and a man called Mick found the ring. It was so heart-warming.”

Charlene said she “burst into tears”, adding: “It was just local people being so sound.”

A year married, Charlene said they hope to have another party to celebrate their wedding later in June.

The couple tied the knot in January 2021 at Castle Leslie with just four people during lockdown.

“My friends wanted us to do it in New York, but my in-laws are just dying to come here.

“They can’t wait for a party in a castle.

“We are a year in, and I still get giddy when I say husband and when I hear him say wife.

“I just can’t believe my luck. I am always touching wood, and reminding myself to enjoy it. I know that life will always be tidal. I guess this is just a good tide for us at the moment,” she added.
